BCCI Awards 2024: Shubman Gill, Deepti Sharma named best international cricketers of 2022-23

BCCI Awards 2024: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) held its annual awards ceremony on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, in Hyderabad. The event honoured the outstanding performers of Indian cricket in various categories for the past four seasons, from 2019-20 to 2022-23.

Polly Umrigar Award

The most prestigious award, the Polly Umrigar Award for the best international cricketer (men), was given to four players for each season:

Mohammad Shami (2019-20)
Ravichandran Ashwin (2020-21)
Jasprit Bumrah (2021-22)
Shubman Gill (2022-23)

Gill, who led Gujarat Titans to the IPL title in 2023 and scored 1,024 runs in 14 Tests at an average of 64, became the first player to receive the award for the 2022-23 season. BCCI Awards 2024

The best international cricketer (women) award was also shared by four players:

Deepti Sharma (2019-20, 2022-23)
Smriti Mandhana (2020-21, 2021-22)

Sharma, who scored 1,087 runs and took 54 wickets in 36 ODIs and 18 T20Is in the last four seasons, was the only player to win the award twice.

Col. C. K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award

The Col. C. K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award, which recognises the contribution of cricketers who have played a significant role in the development of Indian cricket, was bestowed upon two legends of the game:

Farokh Engineer
Ravi Shastri

Engineer, who played 46 Tests and five ODIs for India between 1961 and 1975, was one of the finest wicket-keeper batsmen of his era. Shastri, who played 80 Tests and 150 ODIs for India between 1981 and 1992, was also the head coach of the Indian team from 2017 to 2021, guiding them to several memorable victories. BCCI Awards 2024

Best International Debut

The best international debut (men) award was given to four players for each season:

Mayank Agarwal (2019-20)
Axar Patel (2020-21)
Shreyas Iyer (2021-22)
Yashasvi Jaiswal (2022-23)

Jaiswal, who scored 1,038 runs in 11 Tests at an average of 94.36, including four centuries and three fifties, was also the highest run-scorer in Test cricket for the 2022-23 season. BCCI Awards 2024

Priya Punia (2019-20)
Shafali Verma (2020-21)
Sabbhineni Meghana (2021-22)
Amanjot Kaur (2022-23)

Kaur, who made her debut in the Women’s Premier League in 2023, scored 421 runs in 14 matches at a strike rate of 156.64, including six half-centuries. BCCI Awards 2024

The BCCI also honoured the best performers in domestic cricket, umpiring, and coaching. Some of the notable winners are:

Jaydev Unadkat, Shams Mulani, and Jalaj Saxena for the highest wicket-taker in Ranji Trophy for 2019-20, 2021-22, and 2022-23 respectively.
Rahul Dalal, Sarfaraz Khan, and Mayank Agarwal for the highest run-scorer in Ranji Trophy for 2019-20, 2021-22, and 2022-23 respectively.
Baba Aparajith, Rishi Dhawan, and Riyan Parag for the best all-rounder in domestic limited-overs competitions for 2019-20, 2020-21, 2021-22, and 2022-23 respectively.
Mumbai, Madhya Pradesh, and Saurashtra for the best performance in BCCI domestic tournaments for 2019-20, 2021-22, and 2022-23 respectively.
A Padmanabhan, Vrinda Rathi, Jayaraman Madangopal, and Rohan Pandit for the best umpires in domestic cricket for 2019-20, 2020-21, 2021-22, and 2022-23 respectively.
