Maruti Suzuki, India’s most valuable carmaker, is planning to launch a revolutionary new service that will take transportation to new heights. SkyDrive, the name of the company’s electric air copters, will offer air taxi services to customers who want to avoid traffic congestion and enjoy a scenic view of the city.

SkyDrive is expected to make its debut at the 2025 Osaka Expo in Japan, where Maruti Suzuki will showcase its innovative technology and design. The air copters will have 12 motor and rotor units, and will be able to carry three passengers, including the pilot. They will be bigger than drones but smaller than conventional helicopters, and will weigh about half as much as the latter.

The company intends to eventually introduce SkyDrive to India through the ‘Make in India’ initiative, and is in talks with the aviation regulator, DGCA, to obtain the necessary permissions and approvals. Maruti Suzuki is also exploring the Indian market for potential partners and customers, who could benefit from the convenience and efficiency of air taxis.

According to Kento Ogura, the assistant manager for global automobile planning at Suzuki Motor, the parent company of Maruti Suzuki, the goal of SkyDrive is to be a pioneer in the development of new mobility solutions, starting with the US and Japanese markets and gradually moving on to India. Ogura works in the automobile product planning group, and is one of the key people behind SkyDrive.

He said that the advantages of electrification are manifold, as it reduces the number of aircraft parts, lowers the manufacturing and maintenance costs, and minimizes the environmental impact. He also said that SkyDrive will be able to take off and land on building rooftops, which will open up new possibilities for urban planning and development.

SkyDrive is not the only ambitious project that Maruti Suzuki is working on. The company is also investing heavily in electric vehicles, hybrid cars, and autonomous driving systems, as it aims to maintain its dominance in the Indian auto sector and expand its global presence. With a market cap of Rs 3.36 lakh crore, Maruti Suzuki is currently the most valuable automaker in India, followed by Tata Motors at Rs 3.34 lakh crore.

Maruti Suzuki’s SkyDrive is a testament to the company’s vision and innovation, and a sign of the future of transportation. As the world moves towards cleaner and smarter mobility solutions, SkyDrive could be the game-changer that India needs.
