India’s captain Rohit Sharma scores the fastest hundred by an Indian batter in the World Cup history, eclipsing Kapil Dev’s record of 1983.

Rohit Sharma, the skipper of the Indian cricket team, etched his name in the record books on Wednesday, October 11, 2023, when he smashed the fastest hundred by an Indian batter in the World Cup.

He accomplished the feat in just 63 balls against Afghanistan at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. He broke the previous record of 72 balls held by the legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev in 1983 against Zimbabwe at Turnbridge Wells.

Rohit Sharma was in a destructive mood as he tore apart the Afghan bowlers from the outset. He reached his half-century off 30 balls as India scored 94 runs in the powerplay without losing a wicket.

He did not relent even after the field restrictions were lifted and hit 12 fours and six sixes in his innings. He finished his hundred in style by hitting a four off Mujeeb Ur Rahman in the 14th over.

Rohit Sharma also broke several other records with his stunning knock. He scored the most centuries in ODI World Cup history, with seven hundreds in just 22 matches. He went past Sachin Tendulkar, who had six hundreds in 45 matches.

He also became the batter with most international sixes across formats, with 556 sixes. He overtook Chris Gayle, who had 553 sixes. He also scored his fastest-ever century in ODIs, beating his previous best of 65 balls against Sri Lanka in 2017.

Rohit Sharma’s brilliant knock helped India chase down the target of 273 in just 35 overs, winning by eight wickets with more than half of their overs remaining. Virat Kohli played a supporting role with an unbeaten 55 off 48 balls, his second consecutive half-century in the tournament. Shreyas Iyer also chipped in with a quick-fire 25 off 16 balls.

Rohit Sharma was adjudged the player of the match for his record-breaking innings. He dedicated his award to his wife and daughter, who were present at the stadium to cheer him on. He also praised his teammates for their support and said that he was happy to contribute to the team’s victory.

Rohit Sharma has been leading India from the front in the World Cup, scoring 436 runs in six matches at an average of 87.20 and a strike rate of 123.57. He has also led India to five wins out of six matches, making them one of the favourites to lift the trophy. India will face England in their next match on October 15 at Kolkata.
