Rohit Sharma, the captain of the Indian cricket team, made history on Wednesday, October 11, 2023, when he scored the fastest 100 by an Indian batter in the World Cup. He achieved the feat in just 63 balls against Afghanistan at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. He surpassed the previous record of 72 balls set by the legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev in 1983 against Zimbabwe at Turnbridge Wells.

Rohit Sharma dominates Afghan bowlers from the start

Rohit Sharma was in sublime form as he dominated the Afghan bowlers from the start. He reached his half-century off 30 balls as India scored 94 runs in the powerplay without losing a wicket. He continued his onslaught even after the field restrictions were lifted and hit 12 fours and six sixes in his innings. He completed his hundred in style by hitting a four off Mujeeb Ur Rahman in the 14th over.

Rohit Sharma also broke another record of the master blaster Sachin Tendulkar, who had scored six hundreds in 45 matches in the World Cup from 1992 to 2011. Rohit Sharma now has seven hundreds in just 22 matches in the World Cup, making him the most prolific century-maker in the tournament’s history. He also became the fourth Indian batter to score over 1000 runs in the World Cup, joining Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli and Sourav Ganguly.

Rohit Sharma’s brilliant knock helped India post a mammoth total of 385 for 4 in their allotted 50 overs. Afghanistan were never in the chase and were bowled out for 189 in 40.2 overs, giving India a huge win by 196 runs. Jasprit Bumrah was the pick of the Indian bowlers with four wickets for 39 runs.
