Pakistan vs Netherlands: Pakistan overcomes de Leede heroics for 81-run win

Pakistan started their ICC World Cup 2023 campaign with a convincing 81-run victory over the Netherlands in Hyderabad on Friday. Here are the highlights of the match:

Pakistan’s inning

  • Pakistan posted 286 all out in 49 overs, thanks to half-centuries from Saud Shakeel and Mohammad Rizwan, who both scored 68.
  • Netherlands’ all-rounder Bas de Leede was the star with the ball, taking four wickets for 62 runs.
  • Pakistan lost their top three batsmen within the first 10 overs, as Fakhar Zaman (9), Imam-ul-Haq (11) and Babar Azam (8) all fell cheaply to the disciplined bowling of Netherlands.
  • Shakeel and Rizwan then steadied the ship with a 120-run partnership for the fourth wicket. They mixed caution with aggression and kept the scoreboard ticking.
  • De Leede broke the stand by dismissing both Shakeel and Rizwan in quick succession. He also removed Iftikhar Ahmed (23) and Shadab Khan (25) later on.
  • The lower order chipped in with some cameo knocks, as Hasan Ali (16), Nawaz (15) and Rauf (14) helped Pakistan cross the 250-mark.
  • Paul van Meekeren and Logan van Beek took two wickets each for Netherlands.

Netherlands’ innings

  • Netherlands were bowled out for 205 in 38 overs, handing Pakistan a comfortable win.
  • Haris Rauf and Mohammad Nawaz picked up three wickets each for Pakistan.
  • Netherlands lost Max O’Dowd (5) in the third over, caught by Shaheen Afridi off Hasan Ali.
  • Ben Cooper (13), Stephan Myburgh (18) and Scott Edwards (4) all fell to Nawaz’s left-arm spin, leaving Netherlands reeling at 51 for 4 in the 13th over.
  • De Leede showed his class with the bat as well, scoring a brilliant 67 off 68 balls, but he lacked support from the other end. He hit seven fours and two sixes in his innings.
  • De Leede’s resistance ended when he was bowled by Nawaz in the 24th over. His wicket triggered a collapse, as Netherlands lost their last five wickets for just 100 runs.
  • Vikramjit Singh was the only batsman who showed some fight, hitting six fours and a six in his maiden ODI half-century. He scored 52 off 40 balls.
