India vs Sri Lanka: Sri Lanka win the toss and opt to bowl

Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews won the toss and decided to bowl first against India in the 33rd match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday.

Mathews said that he wanted to make use of the early moisture and swing on the pitch and put pressure on the Indian batsmen. He also said that he was confident of chasing any target on this ground.

India captain Rohit Sharma said that he would have batted first anyway, as he felt that the pitch would get slower and lower as the match progresses.

He also said that he was happy with his team’s performance so far and hoped to continue the winning momentum. He made one change in his playing XI, bringing in Suryakumar Yadav for Shreyas Iyer, who was rested due to a minor niggle.

India are unbeaten in the tournament, having won all six of their matches. They have already qualified for the semi-finals and are looking to finish at the top of the table.

Sri Lanka have only two wins out of six and are on the verge of elimination. They need to win this match and hope for other results to go their way to have a slim chance of making it to the knockouts.

The pitch at the Wankhede Stadium is expected to be a batting paradise, with high scores being posted by both teams. The average first innings score at this venue in the last 20 matches is 258 runs.

The pitch will also offer some assistance to the pacers, especially with the new ball and under lights. The spinners will have to vary their pace and length to get some purchase from the surface.

The weather forecast for November 2 shows that there will be no chance of rain interrupting the match. The temperature will be around 29.3 degrees Celsius and humidity will be around 53 per cent. The players will have to deal with the heat and humidity as the day progresses.

Here are the playing XIs of both teams:
