India vs Afghanistan World Cup 2023: Preview, Prediction and How to Watch

India and Afghanistan will face each other in the ninth match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Wednesday, October 11. The two teams have contrasting fortunes and histories in the ODI format, with India being one of the most successful and experienced sides in the world, and Afghanistan being a relatively new and emerging force.

Background

India’s ODI record

India has won two World Cups, in 1983 and 2011, and has reached the semi-finals or finals six times. They have played 1019 ODIs, winning 569 and losing 419, with a win percentage of 57.41. They have some of the best players in the world, such as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah and Ravichandran Ashwin. Afghanistan’s ODI record

Afghanistan, on the other hand, has played only 153 ODIs, winning 55 and losing 92, with a win percentage of 37.25. They have qualified for three World Cups, in 2015, 2019, and 2023, but have won only one match out of 15 so far. They have some talented players, such as Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, and Mujeeb Ur Rahman, but they lack the consistency and experience to play against top teams. They are currently ranked tenth in the ICC ODI rankings, ahead only of Ireland and Zimbabwe.

Head-to-head

The two teams have met only three times in ODIs, with India winning two and one ending in a tie. The last time they played was in the 2019 World Cup in Southampton, where India scraped through by 11 runs in a low-scoring thriller. Afghanistan gave India a tough fight, restricting them to 224 for 8 and then reaching 213 for 9 in their chase. Mohammad Nabi scored a valiant 52 and Rashid Khan took three wickets for Afghanistan, while Jasprit Bumrah took four wickets and Mohammed Shami took a hat-trick for India.

India vs Afghanistan World Cup 2023: Prediction

The match on Wednesday is expected to be a high-scoring affair, as the pitch at the Arun Jaitley Stadium is known to be batsman-friendly. The last ODI played here was between South Africa and Sri Lanka in March this year, where more than 700 runs were scored. Rohit Sharma holds the record for the highest individual score at this venue, with 209 against Australia in 2013.

India will start as the overwhelming favorites to win this match, as they have a superior batting line-up, a balanced bowling attack, and a lot of confidence after their hard-fought win over Australia in their opening game. They will look to continue their winning momentum and secure their place in the semi-finals.

Afghanistan will hope to pull off an upset and register their first win over India in ODIs. They will rely on their spinners, especially Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman, to trouble the Indian batsmen and create pressure. They will also need their top-order batsmen, such as Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Rahmat Shah, to fire and give them a good start.
