New Delhi: India maintained their unbeaten run in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 as they crushed Afghanistan by eight wickets in their second match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Wednesday, October 11.

Afghanistan chose to bat first, hoping to challenge India’s formidable bowling attack. However, they were soon in trouble as Bumrah struck twice in his first spell, dismissing openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran for low scores.

Bumrah bowled with speed and precision, causing problems for the Afghan batters with his variations and yorkers. He ended with figures of 4 for 39 in his 10 overs, his best-ever performance in the World Cup.

Afghanistan’s middle order tried to recover the innings, with captain Hashmatullah Shahidi scoring a resilient 80 and Azmatullah Omarzai blasting a quick-fire 54. They added 97 runs for the sixth wicket, the highest partnership of the match. India vs Afghanistan World Cup 2023 Highlights can be watched at world cup website.

However, they could not increase the scoring rate in the final overs as India’s spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja kept them under control. Afghanistan were eventually bowled out for 189 in 40.2 overs, well short of a competitive total on a good batting pitch.

Rohit Sharma breaks multiple records with superb World Cup ton

India’s chase was a cakewalk as Rohit Sharma took the attack to the Afghan bowlers from the word go. He was aggressive and confident, hitting the Afghan bowlers to all parts of the ground.

He reached his half-century off just 30 balls as India scored 94 for no loss in the powerplay. He did not slow down even after the field restrictions were lifted and hit 12 fours and six sixes in his innings. He completed his hundred in style by hitting a four off Mujeeb Ur Rahman in the 14th over.

Rohit Sharma broke several records with his stunning knock. He scored the fastest hundred by an Indian batter in the World Cup, breaking Kapil Dev’s record of 72 balls set in 1983 against Zimbabwe. He also broke Sachin Tendulkar’s record of most hundreds in the World Cup, scoring his seventh ton in just 22 matches, compared to Tendulkar’s six hundreds in 45 matches. He also became the fourth Indian batter to score over 1000 runs in the World Cup, joining Tendulkar, Virat Kohli and Sourav Ganguly.

Rohit Sharma was dismissed for 100 off 63 balls by Rashid Khan, but by then he had done enough damage. India needed only 86 more runs to win with nine wickets in hand.

Virat Kohli steers India home with unbeaten fifty

He shared an unbroken stand of 79 runs with Shreyas Iyer, who scored a fluent 34 off 25 balls. India reached their target of 190 in just 23.2 overs, winning by eight wickets with more than half of their overs remaining.

Kohli was named the player of the match for his calm and composed innings. He praised Rohit Sharma for his brilliant century and Bumrah for his exceptional bowling. He also lauded Afghanistan for their fighting spirit and said that they were a tough team to beat.

India climb to second place on the table
