England vs Pakistan Match preview

England and Pakistan will face each other in the 44th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Saturday. This will be the last league stage match for both teams, who have had contrasting fortunes in the tournament.

England, the defending champions, have been knocked out of the semi-final race after a dismal campaign that saw them win only two out of eight matches. They suffered six defeats, including shock losses to New Zealand and Afghanistan.

Their batting, which was supposed to be their strength, failed to fire consistently, while their bowling looked ordinary and lacked penetration. Their captain and wicketkeeper Jos Buttler has been out of form, scoring only 111 runs in seven innings.

Jonny Bairstow, their other opener, has also struggled, managing only 156 runs in eight innings. Their only bright spots have been Ben Stokes, who scored a brilliant century against the Netherlands in their previous match, and Dawid Malan, who has amassed 373 runs at an average of 46.62.

Pakistan, on the other hand, have kept their hopes of qualifying for the semi-finals alive, albeit with a very slim chance. They have won four and lost four matches, and are currently fifth in the points table with eight points.

They need to beat England by a huge margin of around 290 runs or chase down the target in less than 16 overs, to overtake New Zealand on net run rate. Their captain and star batsman Babar Azam has been in sublime form, scoring 432 runs in eight innings, including two centuries and two fifties. He is the second-highest run-scorer in the tournament, behind India’s Rohit Sharma.

Mohammad Rizwan, their wicketkeeper and opener, has also been impressive, scoring 359 runs at an average of 71.80. Their bowling has been led by Shaheen Afridi, who has taken 16 wickets in eight matches and is the joint-highest wicket-taker in the tournament, along with India’s Jasprit Bumrah.

Both teams have a rich history of playing against each other in the World Cup, having met nine times, with England winning six and Pakistan winning three. The last time they faced each other in the World Cup was in 2019 when Pakistan won by 14 runs at Trent Bridge.

However, England has dominated Pakistan in bilateral ODIs since then, winning 14 out of 18 matches. They also beat Pakistan in the final of the T20 World Cup 2022, which was held in India earlier this year.

England vs Pakistan Match Prediction:

England and Pakistan are both playing for pride and a chance to end their World Cup campaign on a high note. However, Pakistan have a very slim mathematical possibility of making it to the semi-finals, which might motivate them to play with more intensity and urgency.

England, on the other hand, have nothing to lose and might play with more freedom and flair. Both teams have some quality players who can turn the match in their favor, and it promises to be a close and exciting contest.

However, Pakistan might have a slight edge over England, given their recent form and momentum, and their familiarity with the conditions in India. Therefore, Pakistan is the favorite to win this match.
